Ted Burns
Team Burns was founded in honor of Ted Burns (6/15/57 - 8/18/08), a loving husband and father of two, who succumbed to colon cancer in late August of 2008.
Ted was born and raised in the city of Philadelphia, where he spent many years in the cooking industry. He worked in and around the city most recently with Marriott Food Service in St. Davids, PA.
In 2006 Ted suffered a Sub-Arachnoid Brain Hemorrage and was treated at Emory University Hospital. Although the physicians could find no reason for the bleeding in Ted's brain, as he was the picture of health with no chronic illnesses, he himself felt that it could possibly have been attributed to stress. For this reason, Ted felt it would be a wonderful opportunity for his family to leave the stresses of the big city and he and his wife of 25 years moved the family to Georgia.
The family spent the first year getting settled in the new city and in their new home. August of 2007, at the age of 50, Ted advised that he was havingsome trouble with his bowels and he was immediately scheduled for a baseline colonoscopy. The test was painless and done in less than an hour. The physician advised that there was evidence of cancerous tumors and that they needed to be removed. The next day, Ted had the tumors removed and was advised that the biopsy which was done during surgery confirmed that it was cancer and was quite advanced. The doctors suggested that he would also need Chemotherapy, which he accepted.
Unfortunately, Ted lost his battle after 11 months but leaves a legacy of family members who vow to continue the fight not only for him but for all of those living with the disease and for those yet to be diagnosed.
